Journal of the History of Collections (2006)
  • Janice Neri, Boise State University
Abstract
This book explores the ways that bodily engagement with material objects and processes contributed to the formation of knowledge of the natural world in early modern Europe. Smith's book is expansive in its chronological and geographical scope, concentrating on Northern European developments but also touching on Italy, and covering the period c.1400-1700. A rich range of visual images, texts, objects and materials are presented in this detailed study.
