	<p>Michel de Certeau's model of strategies and tactics, applied to a postcolonial assessment of both Algerian literature in French as well as Algerian women's sterotyped silence, has prompted this exploration of how the manipulation of silence may be used to challenge a gender-differentiated power system.  This book considers the effects of practical silence on the lives of Malika Mokeddem's female protagonists in the following novels:  (1990), Siècle des sauterelles> (1992),  (1993), Rêves et des assassins> (1995), lézarde> (1998),  (2001),  (2003),  (2006), and < Je dois tout à ton oubli> (2008).</p>

	<p>René-Nicolas Ehni, controversial social figure and critic in France since the 1960s and literary figure especially known for his plays and novels, characterizes his French military service during the Algerian war for independence in his autobiographical <em>Algérie roman</em>, published in 2002.  In the novel, the first-person narrator-protagonist intersperses his descriptions of the struggle with scenes from his past and present denoting family genealogies and homosexual relationships.  Through a narration that is itself marked by violence, including digressions, rhetorical figures and discontinuous prose, <em>Algérie roman</em> strongly affirms the significance of masculine friendships of every kind.</p>

	<p>Since 2003, when Clémence Boulouque's memoir, <em>Mort d'un silence</em>, was published, its author has written in a variety of genres, including novels, articles, and film scripts.  <em>Mort d'un silence</em>, her first autobiographical work, interests the reader for several reasons: it revisits Judge Gilles Boulouque's suicide in December 1990 and the consequences of this act for his family, especially his thirteen-year-old daughter, Clémence; it recalls the political climate in France during the late 1980s, when Gilles Boulouque had already begun to fight terrorism; and it illustrates the tension between disclosure and concealment as its twenty-six-year-old narrator describes her passage from childhood to adulthood following her father's death.</p>

	<p>According to Dr. Joan Borysenko, a woman's life proceeds according to predictable steps: one expects to rear one's children before being faced with the death of one's spouse and subsequent widowhood.  However, in ultraconservative Algeria, where armed Islamist radicals during the past decade and a half have incited violence against ordinary citizens, especially women, the standard model of a woman's life does not necessarily apply.  Latifa Ben Mansour, expatriate <em>Algérienne</em>, psychoanalyst, and contemporary francophone author, has made the Algerian woman's plight under ultra-right-wing rule the subject of many of her writings.  This paper will discuss the themes of her novel, <em> L'année de l'éclipse</em>, through political, psychological, and stylistic lenses.</p>

	<p>Expatriate Algerian author Malika Mokeddem has modified literary genres throughout her fiction of the 20th and 21st centuries.  For example, her second novel, <em>Le siècle des sauterelles</em>, combines elements of history and fantasy.  This paper analyzes the ways in which the above novel containing fairy tale elements departs from strict fairy tale code.  <em>Les Mille et une nuits</em>, and works  by Perrault, Aulnoy, and Propp will provide the theoretical bases of my arguments.</p>
