Before moving to Australia in 2002, Iain worked for THUS plc (formerly Scottish Telecom) in telecoms regulation and contracts. Iain completed an LLM at Bond University in 2003, and took up a position as an academic fellow and PhD candidate at Bond the following year. In 2009 he was awarded the degree of doctor of philosophy for his thesis, "Judicial Mediation and Ch III of the Commonwealth Constitution".
