I was born in El Salvador and immigrated to the United States at the age of eight. I received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Computer Science (1985) from UCLA, and my Ph.D. in Mathematics (1992) from UC Berkeley. I am currently Professor of Mathematics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. My research interests center on functional analysis, harmonic analysis and wavelets; among my other mathematical hobbies are linear algebra and continued fractions. One of my other interests is working on projects to increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in mathematics and the sciences, for example the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program (MSRI-UP) in Berkeley, CA.
