Abstract
This cultural studies textbook is anchored in a literacy-based approach and focuses on enriching students' knowledge of contemporary France, analyzing and interpreting texts and cultural artifacts from and about France, and developing students' advanced capacities for articulating and defending ideas in French, both orally and in writing, related to course topics. Four major questions related to contemporary French culture are explored in the textbook, including the following: Module One: How does France represent itself to the world? How are France and French people represented by others? Module Two: What are the salient elements of French identity today? Module Three: What are the most pressing social and cultural questions in France today? Module Four: How can we understand France's place in today's world? Taken together, exploring these themes systematically over four modules helps students to formulate informed responses to the complex question of "Qu’est-ce qu'être français aujourd'hui?" and to develop a deeper understanding of contemporary French culture and the perspectives of French people in the 21st century.
