Dr. Gyongyi Szabo, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Division of
Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her
current bench research activities include: (1) Immune alterations induced by acute
alcohol consumption; (2) Intracellular signaling pathways in leukocytes mediating altered
cytokine production after acute alcohol use; (3) Immune mechanisms leading to increased
liver injury in HCV plus alcohol; and (4) Immunopathogenesis of liver injury in obese
mice. Clinical research activities include (1) Immune mechanisms of increased liver
injury in HCV plus alcohol (overlap with bench research project #3); (2) Therapeutic
studies in chronic hepatitis C; (3) Therapeutic approaches in non-alcoholic
steatohepatitis (NASH); and (4) Fatty liver disease in morbidly obese patients undergoing
bariatric surgery.
