About Dr Gerald K. White (retired)

Dr Gerald (Gerry) White was a Principal Research Fellow, Teaching Learning and Leadership at the Australian Council for Educational Research from 2008-2015. Gerry established the Digital Education Research Network (DERN) which can be accessed at https://dern.acer.edu.au.
Gerry White was the inaugural CEO of Australia’s national Ministerial education and training Internet agency, Education.au Limited, from 1997 to 2006. Education.au Limited, a MCEETYA owned company, was responsible for national internet developments such as Education Network Australia (EdNA), MyFuture and other national projects, as well as international alliances to benefit Australian education. Gerry was a member of the Australian ICT in Education Committee (AICTEC) and its schools, training and higher education sub-committees and related bodies from 1997 to 2006.
Gerry is a regular writer, researcher, keynote speaker, and panelist at numerous national and international conferences. Some recent international presentations of note include keynote addresses in Barcelona for the International Online Educa Conference (May 2003), at the Eminent III conference in Stockholm (November 2003) and Eminent VI in Paris (December, 2005), CeBIT (May 2004), Asia Pacific Forum Science Meeting in India (October, 2004), Online Educa Conference in Berlin (1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as at the annual CoSN conference in Washington and the International Symposium (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), the South-East Asian Summit in Bangkok (2005), KERIS, South Korea (2005, 2010), the Asia-Pacific Forum (2005), the Annual Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Petra, Jordan (2007), South Australian Catholic Principals (2009), NSW Secondary Principals (2009) and the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (2009).Gerry was also the Chair (2002-2006) of the international Global Exchange of Networks in Education (GENIE) which met twice yearly. Gerry was awarded the ICT Leader of the Year by VITTA in 2009, and the Australian College of Educators College Medal in 2014.
Prior to leading the Australia’s education and training ICT agency, Gerry was a Teacher, Lecturer, Maths Consultant, Curriculum Manager, School Principal and Education System Deputy Director.
Gerry is currently an Associate of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and on the International Advisory Council for the Consortium of School Networking in Washington.. His PhD is on the topic of the diffusion of ICT in education and the role of collaboration.
His interests are in teaching, learning and leadership, as well as government policies in the take up and use of the internet in education, especially student learning and teacher professional learning. His focus is on research and evaluation into learning, learning environments, diverse modes of delivery, use of internet resources and services, virtual education, online communities and collaboration. His experience includes management of large scale national and international ICT projects, global networking, industry liaison, support for professional learning and leadership in education.
