Health Status and Access to Health Care of Documented and Undocumented Immigrant Latino Women

Immigrant Latino women represent about one fifth of the total Latino population; however, data on health status and access to care for this population is limited. Using secondary data, we used a cross-sectional study to examine sociodemographic, migration, health status, and access to health care characteristics of immigrant documented and undocumented Latino women in North Texas. Undocumented women were less likely to report having health insurance and a regular health care provider, and reported lower education and income. These results support the need forproviding immigrant women with health services such as health fairs, affordable health insurance programs, community health services, and increased opportunities for participation in federal and state programs.

Assessing Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response of Rural Veterinarians: Experiences and Training Needs

Veterinarians play a unique role in emergency preparedness and response, and federal agencies and academic institutions therefore allocate considerable resources to provide training to enhance their readiness. However, the level of preparedness of veterinarians in many rural regions is yet to be improved. This article reports an assessment of the bioterrorism preparedness, specifically the experience and training needs, of rural veterinarians in North Texas. The study employed a cross-sectional design with a study population that included all veterinarians (N ¼352) in the 37 counties within Texas Department of State Health Services Regions 2 and 3. Data on veterinarians practicing or residing in the target region were obtained from the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The response rate was 35% (n ¼121). Results indicate that chemical exposure was the condition most frequently seen and treated, followed by botulism and anthrax. The majority (80%) of respondents indicated that they had not previously participated in training related to bioterrorism preparedness, and many (41%) also indicated a willingness to participate in a state health department-initiated bioterrorism response plan. However, only 18% were confident in their ability to diagnose and treat bioterrorism cases. These results suggest that many North Texas veterinarians practicing in rural regions could benefit from additional training in bioterrorism preparedness and response. An area in particular need of further training is the diagnosis and treatment of Category A agents. Federal, state, and local health agencies are urged to increase training opportunities and to make additional efforts to involve veterinarians in bioterrorism preparedness and response.

Capacity building of biodefense informatics for public health preparedness and response in rural regions: EpiInfo, GIS, and data management training

Emergency informatics such as data management and geographic information systems applications have become an important training agenda for enhancing health surveillance and risk communication in public health emergencies. The free EpiInfo/Epimap software developed by the CDC offering domain knowledge such as health information management may be particularly useful for preparing nonurban jurisdictions often confronting limited resources in dealing with health emergency events. This article describes the delivery of training workshops to enhance the competencies of health workers in biodefense informatics and discusses its implication for delivering education to rural regions.

Correlates of tobacco cessation counseling among Hispanic physicians in the US: a cross-sectional survey study

BACKGROUND: Physician advice is an important motivator for attempting to stop smoking. However, physiciansa lack of intervention with smokers has only modestly improved in the last decade. Although the literature includes extensive research in the area of the smoking intervention practices of clinicians, few studies have focused on Hispanic physicians. The purpose of this study was to explore the correlates of tobacco cessation counseling practices among Hispanic physicians in the US. METHODS: Data were collected through a validated survey instrument among a cross-sectional sample of self-reported Hispanic physicians practicing in New Mexico, and who were members of the New Mexico Hispanic Medical Society in the year 2001. Domains of interest included counseling practices, self-efficacy, attitudes/responsibility, and knowledge/skills. Returned surveys were analyzed to obtain frequencies and descriptive statistics for each survey item. Other analyses included: bivariate Pearsonas correlation, factorial ANOVAs, and multiple linear regressions. Results: Respondents (n=45) reported a low level of compliance with tobacco control guidelines and recommendations. Results indicate that physicians' familiarity with standard cessation protocols has a significant effect on their tobacco-related practices (r =.35, variance shared=12%). Self-efficacy and gender were both significantly correlated to tobacco related practices (r=.42, variance shared=17%). A significant correlation was also found between self-efficacy and knowledge/skills (r =.60, variance shared=36%). Attitudes/responsibility was not significantly correlated with any of the other measures. Conclusions: More resources should be dedicated to training Hispanic physicians in tobacco intervention. Training may facilitate practice by increasing knowledge, developing skills and, ultimately, enhancing feeling of self-efficacy.

The OLP, a health and wellness profile

Objective: To develop an instrument to assess environmental, emotional, spiritual, physical, social, and intellectual health and wellness. Methods: Reliability was assessed using 102 respondents who completed the OLP on 2 occasions. Concurrent validity was assessed using a second sample of 34 respondents and a panel of 6 experts. Results: Most items had high test-retest correlation coefficients. Each dimension had high internal consistency (ie, high Cronbach Alphas). Independence of items in each dimension suggested good divergent and convergent validity. Conclusions: The OLP is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing dimensions of the Total Person Concept.
