Professor Cary's background includes work on both the prosecution and defense
side of criminal law. She was a prosecutor in the Kings County District Attorney's
Office and Senior Supervising Attorney for the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Appeals
Bureau. She also was Staff Counsel to the New York Civil Liberties Union. She is a
co-author and editor of New York Criminal Law (1997, Supps. 1998, 1999, 2001), and
co-author of Appellate Advocacy: Principles and Practice (3d. ed., 1998) (with U.
Bentele). She is the general editor of the ACLU's series of Know Your Rights books.
