Abstract
A discussion of documents concerning the Confraternity of Saint Cecilia of Évreux and its Puy de Musique (prizes awarded from 1575 to 1589) and an examination of the circumstances of the composition, as well as the musical fabric, of Domine Jesu Christe by Orlando di Lasso, which was awarded the "silver organ" in the inaugural year of the Puy. Proposes that the five-voice motet, a contrived display-piece including a quotation from Josquin, was composed expressly for the Puy.
