Abstract
Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to describe the steps taken by a team of RDNs to revise a state-wide diet manual and develop a customer focused dissemination plan. State regulations require an approved diet manual in facilities licensed by the Bureau of Facility Standards (BFS). Our state affiliate is responsible for updating the state Diet Manual every five years. The purpose of this project was to 1) gather formative input from users, 2) update the Diet Manual based on evidence-based practice, and 3) create a dissemination plan. An online survey was developed and the survey link was emailed to RDNs, DTRs, Dietary Managers, and facility administrators (n=320). Survey responses (n=87) were primarily provided by individuals working in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, in both urban and rural areas of our state. Over fifty percent of respondents reported using the manual; other manuals used include the Nutrition Care Manual and corporate diet manuals. Respondents answered questions about manual format, diets used, and resources needed in their facilities. Those who use the Diet Manual most frequently use it weekly. A member committee and RDN contractor completed the revision. BFS surveyors have approved the manual and the 11th edition will be available in March 2015 on our affiliate website store. New to this revision is an audio recorded webinar. The webinar addresses issues brought up by survey respondents as well as evidence-based recommendations and state regulations for use. The success of this project is attributed to a collaborative effort from users and RDNs and the formative process used to gather input, revise, and market a resource perceived as valuable by RDNs, DTRs, and other stakeholders.
