The paper begins by discussing the relationship between portals and collection development, in particular, the work and skills of collection development librarians. The author points out that the subject expertise characteristic of selectors can play an important role as libraries seek to develop function portals, implement federated collections, manage the chaos of the Web, and meet the challenges of the knowledge management enterprise.
