Abstract

In this paper I argue for the moraic representation of geminates (McCarthy & Prince 1988, Hayes 1989 and others) based on the distributional and featural restrictions of geminates in the dialect of Fula analyzed by Paradis in her (1992) dissertation. I show how this representation grossly accounts for the distribution of geminates as opposed to the distribution of consonant clusters in Fula, and how the notions of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993, McCarthy & Prince 1993 and others) can help to explain the details of this opposition.
