Amniotic Band Syndrome was the diagnosis given to us at the time of our son's birth. However, we later discovered the cause of his congenital below-elbow amputation was genetic in nature. We've created a website to help other individuals and families with anatomical differences at http://www.belowelbow.com

I am the mother of two precious children. My first child was born without his left hand. My husband and I were given the diagnosis of Amniotic Band Syndrome, but later found out by a specialist that the cause was genetic. The terms genetic and hereditary are not synonymous. The orthopedic specialist did not believe we "passed down" the trait for a birth defect, but rather, that it was a sporadic occurrence. We thank God for creating him exactly the way he is and we would not change anything about him. We have created a website and welcome you to visit at www.belowelbow.com or click on the link to the right entitled, "Congenital Limb Differences."
