As an undergraduate from the Department of Planning and Urban studies, Mr. Deason completed an Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) Implementati

on internship at the Port of New Orleans in May 2015. Mr. Deason conducted research on national and international Port GIS systems, management, and software. In consultation with Dr. Michelle Thompson, a customized survey and method to evaluate deployment of a Port GIS was completed. Mr. Deason interviewed key

management and staff to evaluate software and hardware technology needs, examined and documented existing work flows, reviewed GIS software terms and conditions, resources, and summarized the existing Enterprise GIS in a Port GIS Assessment and Recommendations for Future Adoption report. As part of the completion of his internship and research with the port, the Senior

Staff viewed a final presentation titled “Pulling GIS into Port: Implementation of Enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS)”. The goal of this report and presentation is to be a starting point for the future adoption of an integrated Port of New Orleans Enterprise GIS.

 

This research project was focused on (1) Determining department missions, work flows and staffing. (2) Review of National and International Port GIS models a

nd assessment methods. (3) Cost reduction and return on investment. (4) Recommendations for adoption.

 

This research employed a hybrid mixed method approaches using survey and archival data paired with qualitative research from public and academic resources pertaining to the implementation of Enterprise GIS. Findings served to evaluate whether The Port of New Orleans could benefit from the implementation of said technology.
