Derek Kreckler is both a teacher and an artist. From 1994 until 2006, he was a
senior lecturer at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
Prior to that time he was a part-time lecturer at the University of Sydney, Sydney
College of the Arts and the University of NSW, College of Fine Arts. In 2007 he returned
to NSW to work at the University of Wollongong in the Faculty of Creative Arts. Derek has
received of a number of awards and various residencies, including a 12 month residency at
the prestigious MOMA PS1 in New York, 1991 - 1992. He was an Australia Council Fellow in
1995 and 2000. He has exhibited extensively and participated in various national and
international events including The Fire and Life residency in Mumbai in 1997, The 2003
Clemenger Art Award at the National Gallery of Victoria, the 2004 Adelaide Biennale at
the State Gallery of South Australia and the 1982, 1991 and 2004 Biennales of Sydney. He
has been on various boards and committees including The National Association for Art and
Technology (ANAT), The Australia Council, The Australian Venice Biennale selection panel
1999, and the Samstag Awards committee 2001 and 2002. His work is represented in public
and private collections.
