Abstract

The use of data for benchmarking purposes in the higher education sector has increased in recent years, especially in relation to monitoring student perceptions of the university experience. Data sets that enable institutional and national analysis of the course perceptions of specific groups of students are now more valuable than ever. This paper examines the course experiences of international fee-paying graduates from Australian universities as they were articulated through the Graduate Careers Australia Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) and the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE). These students have become an increasingly important group within the Australian university sector over the past few decades. Much of the revenue generated by the multi-billion dollar Australian education industry comes in the form of fees paid by overseas students. While this industry is large and lucrative, it is also fragile and sensitive. Over the past few years, Australian higher education institutions have witnessed a reduced growth in the international student population. The result of this is increasing competition between institutions for international students. Therefore, it is important for institutions to utilise existing national data in order to better understand and improve the experiences of this group. This paper suggests some ways in which the CEQ and AUSSE data can be used for the purposes of benchmarking and improving outcomes.
