Abstract
Getting outdoors supports our connection to nature which, in turn, provides us with a sense of wholeness. As humans, our relationship to nature impacts our mind, body, and spirit in very positive ways. Time spent in nature significantly impacts the well-being of children. However, there is little understanding of the family experiences that foster a love of nature in children, prompting this phenomenological and ethnographic study examining four families and our personal accounts of time spent in nature, through the lenses of mothers and their children. The four of us, autoethnographers, and our collective 12 children responded to The Love and Care of Nature Scale (LCNS) and six focal point questions designed to elicit what gave heart and meaning to our experiences in nature. We shared our responses in various forms including journaling, writings, video or voice memo recordings, visual art, or photographs. Through narrative inquiry and collaborative autoethnography, we were able to collectively analyze and interpret data that describes family experiences that foster a love of nature. The two main themes that emerged from the collective experiences were a deepened connection to nature and others, and improved wholeness, well-being, and inner peace (or Spirit). Unanticipated findings included unstructured time and freedom to explore, being active outdoors, traveling together to do something new, and intentionally creating opportunities outdoors as themes that fostered families' love of nature.
