Medical Doctor - Ege Doctor of Philosophy - UNSW I studied medicine at Ege (Aegean) University, which is located in another coastal city, Izmir (Smyrna), in Turkey. After graduating with high distinction average in 1982, I worked as a general practitioner for four years to fulfil the Compulsory Government Service and the National Service. In 1987 I moved to Sydney and commenced my doctoral study in neurophysiology at the School of Physiology and Pharmacology, University of NSW. During this period I worked on animal models and investigated the functional organisation of cortical somatosensory areas I and II. In 19991, prior to completion of my degree, I took up a lectureship position at the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Sydney and subsequently received my PhD in 1992. At the University of Sydney I taught neurophysiology, as well as other biomedical topics, to students enrolled in various health science programs. I also established a sensorimotor research laboratory and concentrated on studies in clinical neurophysiology. During my research career I also worked as a visiting research fellow at the Institute of Neurology, London, UK and the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Ege University Medical School, Turkey, and established collaborative links. I became senior lecturer in 1996 and Head of School of Biomedical Sciences in 2002; position I held until I joined Bond University in July 2005. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Studies conducted in collaboration with national and international groups at Sydney, Western Sydney and Ege universities. Current studies include the magnetic stimulation of the brain to determine the effects of stroke on the sensorimotor system, effects of magnetic stimulation on tactile and motor functions, alteration of sensorimotor functions during sexual arousal in normal and erectile dysfunction conditions, and the plasticity and reorganisation in the brain of diabetic amputees.
