Current research at all levels of schooling emphasizes the importance of effective reading comprehension as well as the challenges instructors face in teaching it. In 2007, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) awarded The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) a grant to develop 14 online professional development modules. These modules provide reading comprehension strategies to college-level faculty who are teaching entry-level college courses across disciplines. The modules were designed to maximize interaction and provide “take aways” for participants.

The purpose of this $245,389 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is to create 14 digitized instructional modules designed to provide college-level faculty with effective strategies to improve reading comprehension skills in entry-level college courses across disciplines. The modules are designed for faculty who were not trained in reading comprehension and are based on the assumption that faculty using these modules are novices in teaching reading comprehension. Of particular note to these 14 modules are 11-14: reading rhetorically, reading electronic texts, reading visuals, and judging textbooks for effective comprehension. I am working as Co-PI along with Sunay Pasole who leads the technology development team.

This study examines perceptions and implementations of collaboration in digitized learning environments. Critically engaging the tools we teach with allows us to consider the rhetorical strategies we must employ to create digital social spaces that exhibit and organize information and social networking in ways that are meaningful, productive, and engaging.
