Decision Methods for Vitual Knowledge Collaboration

Virtual models of knowledge collaboration and access abound in research libraries, but as we move into the 21st century we are developing new ways for strategically advancing knowledge collaboration more broadly and creatively within the research library context. Three areas will be addressed as examples of decision models. First, collaborative decision making to create knowledge rich organizational structures will be discussed. Second, creation of new forms of knowledge through virtual publication by collaboration will be reviewed. Third, development of collaborative learning, teaching, and research spaces will be addressed. Conclusions encompass future-oriented models for knowledge collaboration and access which transcend individuals and organizations.

Recruiting for Diversity: Strategies for 21st Century Research Librarianship

Academic libraries, especially research libraries, are recognizing the benefits and importance of recruiting librarians from diverse backgrounds. The imperative for diversity in higher education and, therefore, in its libraries, provides the context for outlining strategies to recruiting the best and brightest librarians from underrepresented groups. Creative efforts at the national professional organizational level to recruit broadly and effectively are making a difference in widening the pipeline at the entry-level and at higher position levels. In many cases research libraries are campus leaders for diversity initiatives including recruitment and for good reason. This paper will lay out strategies for robust diversity recruiting activities at the organizational and institutional level using the University of Tennessee's experiences as a basis for discussion. Finally, a summary of successful strategies in the current and future context of higher education will provide a roadmap and a catalyst for even greater strides in diversifying academic and research libraries and, in turn, our colleges and universities to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century global society.

Through Any Means Available: Connecting People with Scholarship

This presentation focuses on the 21st century research library's role for connecting people to scholarship. Meeting this challenge requires new organizational strategies, communication techniques, funding approaches, and pedagogies to enable students, faculty, scholars, and alumni to connect to they resources they need to be successful throughout their life. Connecting means locating, using, creating, and interacting and is active rather than passive. It goes beyond the traditional boundaries of the library the campus, and even higher education. Connecting means exposing the world to the intellectual output of the university community. In order to thrive the research library must focus on the broad and deep connections that make sense to people as they engage in daily life.
