Abstract
The wife of the bath made me do it. Why else would an English professor pushing 60 be walking across the Pyrenees on her way to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, just 761 kilometers away? If the good Wife of Bath could journey to "Galice at Saint Jame" sometime during th 14th century, surely I could manage a similar pilgrimage, assisted by all the accouterments ofthe 20th. Our destination was the tomb and shrine of Santiago St. James, in English in the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela in the Spanish region known as Galicia
