About Ann Oberhauser

Dr. Ann Oberhauser is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Iowa State University.  Her research is located within the fields of gender and globalization, feminist economic geography, and critical development studies with an emphasis on rural economic strategies in sub-Saharan Africa, Appalachia, and more recently Iowa. 

She holds a PhD in Geography from Clark University and, before moving to Ames, Iowa, was professor in the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University. Her co-authored book, Feminist Spaces: Gender and Geography in a Global Context, was published by Routledge in 2017. She also co-edited a book with Ibipo Johnston-Anumonwo, Global Perspectives on Gender and Space, in 2014.

Oberhauser is currently conducting research in political sociology on populism and voting behavior in the rural Midwest. She has also done work on critical pedagogy, mentoring, and neoliberalism in higher education.
