Abstract
Effective project management is difficult, complex, and time-consuming. The planning and implementation process present an ongoing challenge for many librarians who work with collections, especially for those who manage large-scale projects that require cross-departmental collaboration. In addition, practical, step-by-step guidance on how to run collection management projects is scarcely found in the published literature. In this chapter, a unique yet highly effective project management practice, which resulted from several successful collection weeding projects at the Kennesaw State University Library System, will be introduced. The authors will explain the process in detail, including how they created plans, established dynamic teams, developed effective workflows, incorporated project management software, developed a communications strategy, and fostered relationships across library departments. The best practices accrued from the team’s first-hand experiences and essential project management documentation will also be shared. It is the hope of the authors that this project management model will demonstrate that large-scale, cross-departmental projects can be very successful, and that it will facilitate similar undertakings at other institutions.
