Alan G. Wiig, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Community Development at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His research in Urban Geography draws on infrastructure studies, economic development, and public policy to understand the role of information technology and the Internet in transforming city governance, civic exchange, and economic development worldwide, trends often considered building the ‘smart city’ or smart urbanism. His current research project analyzes the techno-euphoric politics of new, enclaved zones of economic development and urban growth in North America and the United Kingdom, politics that typically promote business enterprise but sidestep community advancement. His work has been published in leading journals including the Cambridge Journal of Region, Economy, and Society, City: An analysis of urban trends, theory, policy, action, Urban Geography, and the Journal of Urban Technology.
